Review Meeting for 2021 ACM China Rising Star Award and Doctoral Dissertation Award was Successfully Held

December 14, 2021, the review meeting for the 2021 ACM China Rising Star Award and Doctoral Dissertation Award was successfully held online. The meeting was aimed to select the winners of the 2021 ACM China Rising Star Award and Doctoral Dissertation Award, who were young scholars and outstanding PhD students respectively that had made outstanding achievements in the field of computer science. Fan Wu, Vice Chair of ACM China Council and Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, chaired the review meeting.

The meeting began with speeches by Prof. Yunhao Liu, Honorary Chair of ACM China Council, and Prof. Xinbing Wang, Chair of ACM China Council. After that, Prof. Fan Wu made an introduction of the correspondence evaluation for the 2021 Rising Star Award and Doctoral Dissertation Award. This year, ACM China Council received a total of 62 applications from 23 regional chapters and 15 professional chapters (each chapter/SIG recommended no more than one candidate for the Rising Star Award and Doctoral Dissertation Award respectively for the national award selection). In the correspondence evaluation stage, all applicants were divided into system and theory groups, and a number of well-known experts were invited to conduct correspondence evaluation, in which the top 5 candidates for each award were selected respectively, and a total of 10 candidates entered the final defense session.

A total of 42 experts, from the regional and professional chapters of ACM China Council including the chair, vice chair, or general secretaries, were invited to serve as judges for the Rising Star Award and Doctoral Dissertation Award defense review (see Table 1 for details, in alphabetical order by last name). After several rounds of fierce competition and careful discussions among the judges, it was unanimously decided that Shuai Han (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and Wu Liu (JD AI Lab) would receive the 2021 ACM China Rising Star Award, and Xiuzhen Guo (Tsinghua University) and Chen Yan (Zhejiang University) would receive the 2021 ACM China Doctoral Dissertation Award (see Tables 2 and 3 for details), in recognition of their outstanding performance in basic theoretical or applied fundamental research and academic impact in computer science and technology and related fields.
