SIGAI CHINA Symposium: New Challenges and Opportunities in Post-Turing AI Era

The ACM Turing 50th Celebration Conference - China (ACM TURC 2017), will be held from May 12-14, 2017 at Shanghai, China. The conference serves as a highly selective and premier international forum on computer science research. Alan Mathison Turing is the father of computer science, artificial intelligence, the founder of computer logic. He put forward the important concept of "Turing machine" and the "Turing test". In honor of this distinguished scientist, A. M. Turing Award is established according to his name in 1966 by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). It devotes to reward individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the computer industry. The Turing Award is recognized as the highest distinction in computer science and the Nobel Prize of computing.

ACM SIGAI CHINA symposium aims to provide a world’s premier forum of renowned researchers to share their insightful opinions and discuss cutting-edge research on the artificial intelligence. The symposium will feature in types of sessions including distinguished talks and panel discussion. This summit forum expects to promote the development of artificial intelligence from the academic, technical to industry and applications.

    Talk title: 智能机器人:问题与思考

    Professor Xu Yangsheng is Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He received his PhD degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and then joined Carnegie Mellon University, and subsequently The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2013, Professor Xu was appointed the first President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen after a global selection process.
    Professor Xu's research includes robotics, intelligent systems and artificial intelligence. He has been interested in space robotics, service robotics, robot language, wearable interface, intelligent vehicles and self-learning systems. He has published 6 books, and over 300 papers in international journals in these areas. He is Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Fellow of International Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science.

    Talk title: Making Good Decision Quickly

    Sven Koenig is a professor in computer science at the University of Southern California. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1997, and was a program director at the National Science Foundation from 2010 to 2012. Most of his research centers around techniques for decision making that enable single situated agents (such as robots or decision-support systems) and teams of agents to act intelligently in their environments. Prof. Koenig has published more than 200 papers in various areas of artificial intelligence and robotics. He is a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), has won a number of awards for his research, teaching and mentoring, was conference co-chair of the 2004 International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling, program co-chair of the 2005 International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems and the 2015 AAAI Conference. He is the current chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, an associate editor of the Artificial Intelligence journal, the Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems, and the Journal on Advances in Complex Systems, and an editor of the Communications of the ACM and AI Magazine.

    Shipeng Li, Ph.D., IEEE Fellow - Dr. Shipeng Li is the CTO of Cogobuy Group (HK.400) & IngDan – the largest “Uber-like” platform to connect IoT innovators with enterprise service providers. He founded IngDan Labs in 2016. In 1999-2015, he was a Microsoft Partner, Principal Researcher and a founding member of Microsoft Research Asia – the world’s “hottest” Computer lab by MIT TR. In 1996-1999, Dr. Li was with Sarnoff Corporation. A Deputy EiC of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology and a Fellow of IEEE, Dr. Li is an influential & leading expert on multimedia and internet, holding 186 US patents and 330+ international papers, He has trained 4 MIT TR35 Innovator Award Winners over the years. Dr. Li received B.S. (1988) and M.S. (1991) from USTC and Ph.D. (1996) from Lehigh.

    Shiyi CHEN is the Distinguished Professor of Cheung Kong Scholar by Ministry of Education, Distinguished Young Scholar by China National Science Fund and Shanghai Leading Talent. He serves as the Associate Dean of School of Economics Fudan University, Director of Center for Sustainable Development Studies Fudan University, Co-Director of Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute by Chinese University of Hong Kong and Fudan University, and Co-Director of Leading Group of Ecology Environment Humanities and Social Sciences Research at Fudan University. He holds a PhD in Econometrics at Kyungpook National University, Republic of Korea. His research interest is in applied econometrics, risk management and economic efficiency, energy environment and development economics, economic transformation and finance development in China.

    Bill Huang was honored as one of the first group of “Talent 1000” plan of China. He is the GM of Kunhai Innovation Research Institute, a professor of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and a board member of GPS International Advisory Board of UC San Diego. He previously worked at AT&T Bell Labs. Before Cloudminds, he was GM of China Mobile Research Institute, SVP and CTO of UTStarcom. He has creatively proposed the soft-switch concept of "the Network is the Switch", developed the first mobile soft-switch system in the world, and developed the first carrier-class streaming media exchange and IPTV system. He proposed the strategic concept of constructing the three major infrastructures (network, applications and terminals) of the next-generation mobile internet for the carriers, and promoted TD-LTE to be an internationally mainstream B3G standard, thus raising the technological influence of China in the communications industry. In 2016, Bill Huang was honored IEEE CQR award. Mr. Huang received his master degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Illinois in 1984. He graduated from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1982 with a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering.

    Gansha Wu, cofounder and CEO of Uisee Technology Inc., is devoted to transforming the world's transportation with autonomous driving products and solutions. Before this journey, he was Managing Director of Intel Labs China, Intel Principal Engineer. He led Intel's Technology Strategic Long Range Planning on Big Data, and focused the China Labs on three directions, 5G communications, smart computing and robotics. During his years at Intel, he has published more than 10 research papers, held 25 issued US patents (including 10+ international patents) and 14 pending ones.


    Gang Pan (Zhejiang University)

    Gang Pan is a professor of the College of Computer Science and Technology at Zhejiang University. He obtained his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees both from Zhejiang University in 1998 and 2004 respectively. From 2007 to 2008, he was with the University of California, Los Angeles as a visiting scholar. His interests include pervasive computing, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. He has co-authored more than 100 refereed papers, and has 25 patents granted. Dr. Pan is a recipient of CCF-IEEE CS Young Computer Scientist Award, Microsoft Fellowship Award. He has received many technical awards, including TOP-10 Achievements in Science and Technology in Chinese Universities (2016), National Science and Technology Progress Award (2015), Best Paper Award of ACM UbiComp'16, People's Choice Best Paper Award of IEEE CVPR'15, 2016 BCI Research Award Nomination. He serves as an associate editor of IEEE Systems Journal, ACM Proceedings of Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT), and Chinese Journal of Electronics.

    Dr. Shuicheng YAN, is Chief Scientist of Qihoo/360, Director of 360 AI Institute, and former Director of Learning and Vision Research Group of National University of Singapore. He is IEEE Fellow, IAPR Fellow, and ACM Distinguished Scientist. His major research areas include computer vision, machine learning and multimedia analysis, with over 25,000 citations and H-index 67. He is TR Highly-cited Researcher 2014, 2015 and 2016, and his team won 7 times of winner or honorable-mention prizes in PASCAL VOC and ILSVRC challenges, as well as over 10 times of best (student) paper awards.


    Heng Tao SHEN (University of Electronic Science and Technology of China)

    Talk title: Big Multimedia Data Acquisition, Management, and Search

    Heng Tao is currently a Professor of National "Thousand Talents Plan" and the director of Center for Future Media at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). He obtained his BSc with 1st class Honours and PhD from Department of Computer Science, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2000 and 2004 respectively. He then joined the University of Queensland (UQ) as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, and became a Professor in late 2011. His research interests mainly include Multimedia Search, Computer Vision, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence. Heng Tao has made continuous contributions to big data indexing and retrieval, and developed the first real-time near-duplicate video retrieval system. He has published over 160 peer-reviewed papers, most of which are in prestigious international venues of interests, including VLDB Journal, TOIS, TKDE, TIP, TMM, TPAMI, ACM Multimedia, ACM SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, CVPR, ICCV, IJCAI, AAAI, etc. He has been frequently invited for keynote speeches and talks in international conferences and forums. For his outstanding research contributions, Heng Tao received the Chris Wallace Award in 2010 conferred by Computing Research and Education Association, Australasia, and the Future Fellowship from Australia Research Council in 2012. He has managed 14 research projects, including 1 key program from National Natural Science Foundation of China and 8 Projects from Australia Research Council. Heng Tao is also active in community services. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and has been a guest editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and World Wide Web Journal. He has organized ICDE 2013 as Local Organization Co-Chair, and ACM Multimedia 2015 as Program Committee Co-Chair. He has also established strong international collaborations with many research institutes. He holds a position of Visiting Professor in Nagoya University and National University of Singapore. Heng Tao is also an enthusiastic entrepreneur and founded Deltalpha Tech., a startup providing realtime and effective big data and AI solutions to industries including education, tourism, robot, aided driving, surveillance, etc.

    Talk title: Deep Learning for Autonomous

    Dr. Kai Yu is the founder & CEO of Horizon Robotics Inc., a startup dedicated to developing embedded aritificial intelligent (AI) solutions for autonomous driving and smart life. He is an internationally recognized expert in machine learning. He led the R&D of AI at Baidu from April 2012 to June 2015. He founded Baidu IDL (Institute of Deep Learning), the very first and most renowned industrial AI lab in China. His team developed cutting-edge technologies to transform voice search, computer vision, online advertising and web search, and unprecedentedly won the Baidu Highest Achievement Award for 3 times. In 2013, Dr. Yu also launched the first autonomous driving project in China, which later became the Baidu autonomous driving BU (business unit). Dr. Yu has published around 100 papers with more than 11000 citations. In 2011 as an adjunct faculty, he taught a class "CS121: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence" at the Computer Sciences Dept. of Stanford University. He has received many awards, including the Best Paper Runner-up Award of ICML-2013, the First Place of PASCAL VOC 2009, and the First Place of ImageNet Challenge 2010. Before joining Baidu, he worked at Microsoft, Siemens, NEC. He received his B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in E&E from Nanjing University, China, and a doctorate degree in Computer Science from University of Munich, Germany.


    Liang Lin (SenseTime Group Limited and Sun Yat-Sen University)

    Talk title: Beyond Deep Supervised Learning for Visual Recognition

    Liang Lin is the Executive R&D Director of SenseTime Group Limited and a full Professor of Sun Yat-sen University. He is the Excellent Young Scientist of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), Beijing, China, in 2003 and 2008, respectively, and was a joint Ph.D. student with the Department of Statistics, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). From 2008 to 2010, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at UCLA. From 2014 to 2015, as a senior visiting scholar he was with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He currently leads the SenseTime R&D teams to develop cutting-edges and deliverable solutions on computer vision, data analysis and mining, and intelligent robotic systems. He has authorized and co-authorized on more than 100 papers in top-tier academic journals and conferences (e.g., 10 papers in TPAMI/IJCV and 30+ papers in CVPR/ICCV/NIPS/IJCAI). He has been serving as an associate editor of IEEE Trans. Human-Machine Systems, The Visual Computer and Neurocomputing. He served as Area/Session Chairs for numerous conferences such as ICME, ACCV, ICMR. He was the recipient of the Best Paper Runners-Up Award in ACM NPAR 2010, Google Faculty Award in 2012, and Best Student Paper Award in IEEE ICME 2014.

    Talk title: 深度学习在自然语言处理中的应用

    Dr. Enhong Chen is currently a professor and vice Dean of School of Computer Science, the vice Director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Speech and Language Information Processing at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He is the Distinguished Young Scholar of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His research interests include data mining and machine learning, social network analysis and recommender systems. He has published over 100 papers in refereed journals and conferences, including TKDE, TMC, TKDD, TIST, IJCAI, AAAI, KDD, ICDM, CIKM and Nature Communications. He is an associate editor of WWW Journal, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems. He was on program committees of numerous conferences including IJCAI, AAAI, KDD, ICDM, SDM. He was a PC Chair of China Conference of Data Mining (CCDM) 2014, China National Computer Conference (CNCC) 2015. He received the Best Application Paper Award on KDD'08, the Best Research Paper Award on ICDM'11 and the Best of SDM'15 Award.     Zenglin Xu is a Professor in School of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China(UESTC). He is the founder and director of the Statistical Machine Intelligence and LEarning (SMILE) Lab. He is a recipient of China Thousand Talents(Youth) Program. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interest includes machine learning and its applications on social network analysis, health informatics, and cyber security analytics. He has published over 50 papers in prestigious journals and conferences such as NIPS, ICML, IJCAI, AAAI, IEEE PAMI, IEEE TNN, etc. He is also the recipient of the APNNS young researcher award, and the best student paper honorable mention of AAAI 2015. Dr. Xu has been a PC member or reviewer to a number of top conferences such as NIPS, ICML, AAAI, IJCAI, etc. He regularly servers as a reviewer to IEEE TPAMI, JMLR, PR, IEEE TNN, IEEE TKDD, ACM TKDD, etc.


    Fei Wu (Zhejiang University)

    Fei Wu received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Lanzhou University, University of Macau and Zhejiang University in 1996, 1999 and 2002 respectively. From October, 2009 to August 2010, Fei Wu was a visiting scholar at Prof. Bin Yu's group, University of California, Berkeley. Currently, He is a professor at the college of computer science, Zhejiang University. He is the vice-dean of college of computer science, and the director of Institute of Artificial Intelligence of Zhejiang University. He has won various honors such as the Award of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China (2016). His research interests mainly include Artificial Intelligence, Multimedia Analysis and Retrieval and Machine Learning.


    Rui Hou (Chinese Academy of Sciences)

    Talk title: Opportunities and Challenges for System Design in the Era of AI

    Rui Hou is a professor at Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His major research interest includes CPU chip design, AI Cloud and hardware acceleration, data center server architecture, and performance analysis & optimization. Dr Rui Hou leads a team which is focus on the design of next generation data center server and CPU architecture. He proposed cost-effective data center architecture, which enables the software-define data center server via flexible resource sharing mechanisms. And as the chief architect, he also leaded his team to successfully develop a series of high performance server processor chips, including ARMv8 server processor chips, and Power chip. Dr. Rui Hou received his BS and MS degrees from Harbin Institute of Technology, and PhD degree from Institute of Computing, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Before his current position, he worked in IBM China Research from 2007 to 2011. He published over 20 papers in international conferences and journals, and got more than 50 patents.
